Ginastera centennial celebrated all around the world

The year 2016 is a one big celebration of the centennial of Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera. All around the world, leading orchestras and classical music festivals and venues announced Ginastera’s music in their program for this season. The biggest homage will be paid in his native city, Buenos Aires, where he started his carrier in the late ‘30s especially with his ballets Panambí and Estancia. Ten concert series are planned by the Buenos Aires Philharmonic conducted by Enrique Diemecke, then West-Eastern Divan Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim will give Ginastera’s Violin Concerto (performed by his son Michael Barenboim), Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra presents five Ginastera’s works this season (including Harp Concerto and Piano Concerto n.1), Polish National Radio Orchestra gives all-Ginastera program in Katowice, and many other performances honoring Alberto Ginastera’s music (Berlin Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Spanish National Orchestra, etc.). 

Los Angeles Philharmonic goes on tour with Gustavo Dudamel presenting Ginastera’s Piano concerto n.1, starting at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, continuing to New York, Paris, Luxembourg and London.As for the ballets, the highlight is the return of Christopher Wheeldon’s Estancia to New York City Ballet and then on tour at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. Regarding the operas, Bomarzo is planned at Teatro Real in Madrid and Beatrix Cenci at the Teatro Colón.This anniversary incites also world premieres, such as Asian premiere of Piano Concerto n.1 with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, first Scandinavian performance of Ginastera’s early Concierto Argentino by Stavanger Symphony. To leave a permanent souvenir of this anniversary, Juanjo Mena decided to record new Ginastera CD series with the BBC Philharmonic.
