Montreal Symphony Orchestra 2016-2017

Montreal Symphony Orchestra, led by maestro Kent Nagano announced its 83rd season created with a lot of diversity, new vision and complexity. Series of hundred concerts starts in September with Carmina Burana, continues with Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, Bernstein’s airs from West Side Story and A Quite Place, Dutilleux’s Second Symphony “Le Double”, Messiaen’s Turangalîlâ-Symphonie (to celebrate 25 years from his death), Shostakovich’s first and last symphonies, presenting great musicians like Vadim Repin, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Rafal Blechacz, Angela Hewitt, and many others. Conductors joining the OSM this season are for example Vasily Petrenko, Jeffrey Tate, Sir Andrew Davis or James Conlon. Joshua Bell will play as well as conduct the orchestra during the same concert and Bernard Labadie plans a big come back to OSM in a Haydn-Mozart-Beethoven program.

To celebrate 50 years of metro opening in Montreal, orchestra commissioned pieces of composers José Evangelista and Robert Normandeau. You can also look forward to Italian Festival with great classics of Vivaldi, Verdi or Morricone and Festival Haydn & the minimalists presenting 4 concerts in 3 days with soloist Marc-André Hamelin and violinist Pinchas Zukerman (on program four last of Haydn’s symphonies and compositions of Glass, Reich or Pärt). OSM prepared a very nice program for Christmas period, with ballet The Nutcracker, Russian songs and children’s choir. Artists in residence this year are pianist Louis Lortie and violinist James Ehnes each giving a recital as well as a concert. In 2017, the city of Montreal celebrates its 375 years and therefore, to close the season, OSM with Kent Nagano, will present a special new visual and acoustic piece of composer Samy Moussa and the team of Moment Factory. 

The orchestra prepared special concerts for children and the whole family (accompanied with theatre and dance), series of concerts called “Métro+Concerto“ that starts earlier and goes on without a break, great subscribers program, very advantageous for young music lovers, and much more.
