Sakari Oramo wins Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award

Sakari Oramo, Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, has been awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award for Conductor, impressing the jury with “the combination of passion and searching intelligence he brought to a vast range of music” in performances with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in the UK throughout 2015

The RPS Music Awards, marking outstanding musical achievement in the UK in 2015, are chosen by distinguished, independent juries. In its citation, the RPS Music Awards jury said of Sakari Oramo:  “Passion and searching intelligence distinguished this conductor in a vast range of music across the year, from a thrilling Belshazzar’s Feast at the Proms to his peerless Nielsen symphony cycle and shattering Elgar 2nd symphony with the BBC SO at the Barbican, where he also brought to life some significant BBC commissions. Sakari Oramo is a conductor who continues to grow and grow”. 

Sakari Oramo joins an illustrious list of outstanding conductors to have previously won the RPS Music Award for Conductor, including Esa-Pekka Salonen, Antonio Pappano,Bernard Haitink, Pierre Boulez, Marin Alsop, Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, and last year, Andris Nelsons.
