Season announcement 2016/17 Kent Nagano and Hamburg State Opera

Kent Nagano, General Music Director of the Hamburg State Opera and Chief Conductor of the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra, Georges Delnon, director of the Hamburg State Opera and John Neumeier, Director and Chief Choreographer of the Hamburg Ballet, presented their new season 16/17 yesterday, 19 April 2016.

 Kent Nagano will conduct the new productions of Alban Berg’s Lulu staged by Swiss director Christoph Marthalers (Premiere on 12 February 2017) and also Richard Strauss‘ Frau ohne Schatten (Premiere on 16 April 2017) staged by Andreas Kriegenburg. Together with the Philharmonic State Orchestra Kent Nagano will go on South America tour in September and early October 2016. Together they will perform in cities like Montevideo, Sao Paolo and Buenos Aires. Both symphonic and opera repertoire (Wagner’s Tristan & Isolde) will be on the program. Back in Hamburg in autumn 2016 Kent Nagano will conduct revivals of Salome and Lohengrin, and in January / February 2017 also the revival of his very first production at the Hamburg State Opera: Hector Berlioz‘ Les Troyens.

Among the highlights of the 189th Philharmonic concert season there are three concerts with large orchestration conducted by Kent Nagano, all in the new Elbphilharmonie: on the occasion of the opening festival of the Elbphilharmonie: world premiere of a commissioned work by Jörg Widmann on 13 January 2017 ;  Symphony No. 8 by Gustav Mahler in cooperation with the Hamburg State Opera and the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg on 30 April and 1 May 2017, visualized by the artist Rosalie ;   Arnold Schönberg‘s “Gurre-Lieder” (Mid June 2017)

The Philharmonic Academy launched by Kent Nagano in 2015 will again be on the program before the official start of the season in September 2016: In addition to the violinist Veronika Eberle, the Audi Youth Choir Academy is invited to play chamber music with the Philharmonic orchestra, et al Ligeti’s “Poème symphonique for 100 Metronomes”.
